10 best tips for playing Flinthook

Hey everyone for this review I take on Flinthook for the Playstation 4. Its also on Xbox One and Steam. This is another solid roguelite even though we have gotten a lot of these in recent memory this one may still worth checking out.

This game was provided by the publisher for the purpose of this review.

My reviews are 100% unbiased and I will never do one unless I am confident enough to do so. I use a scale of 1 - 10 with 5 being a average game. Many professional reviewers use 7 as a average game which I find is more of a trick to convince you the consumer that a game is better then it really is.

~~Game Description~~
Flinthook is a fast action-platformer with “roguelike” elements. Become space’s greatest pirate with your hookshot, pistol and slowmo powers!

Zip around with your mighty hookshot! Aim freely and toss your giant anchor at golden rings to propel yourself around the levels at high speeds, giving you the agility and swiftness needed to dodge hazards and enemy bullets.
Shoot in 360’ through your Blasma Pistol! Take down all sorts of enemies with fresh hot bullets!
Look really cool with slow-motion powers! Slow down time to adjust your aim or pull off a tight stunt - do it often, it recharges real quickly and it makes you at least 200% cooler.

Blast through randomly-assembled pirate spaceships! Each level is special, as ships are procedurally built from hundreds of hand-crafted rooms, modified by various variants, filled with extraordinary treasure and populated by random waves of enemies.
Hunt down the pirate lords of the Cluster Clan! Feed your compass creature to pinpoint the bosses’ location, then take them down and bring your bounty home. Your rivals are no space chumps, make sure you’re ready for the challenge!
Collect rare relics and powerful perk cards! All the treasure you loot builds up your legend - unlock new equippable perks as you level up, buy permanent upgrades in the Black Market, and hoard collectible relics and lore pages!
Uncover some mysterious secrets?! I don’t know, are there secrets in this game? O_O

Flinthook - True Ending Speedrun in 1:51:58

This was definitely way more difficult than speeding through the normal ending, but it didn't seem to add as much time to the run as I expected it to. That doesn't factor in failed attempts, however, which can make running the True Ending a considerably larger time investment overall. In any case, it's pretty satisfying to see that the story can be run in under two hours. I'm not sure I'll do much more in the way of speedrunning this game, but I look forward to seeing what kind of crazy times other people will be able to accomplish in the future :)

A few notes regarding this run:
- The timer on the bottom of the screen does still obscure some text pop ups, unfortunately. I don't think it's as unbearable as the health bar being completely covered, but I've figured out a better placement for the timer if ever I run this game again.
- It took me a few minutes after defeating Goldfeathers to realize I had forgotten to mark the time, so the timing for that segment is a little off.
- The audio in this game can glitch out at times for reasons I'm still not entirely sure of, and sadly the final Gwarlock fight is missing its music as a result of this bug.

Flinthook Review - Binding of Isaac Meets Spiderman

I review Flinthook, a new indie game developed and published by Tribute Games for the PC, PS4 and Xbox One. I will be reviewing the PC version.

Play a space captain named Flinthook. Live the life of space captain Flinthook! Armed with your mighty hookshot, your uncanny slow-motion powers and your trusty blasma pistol, plunder and fight your way through an infinite variety of randomly-assembled spaceships for treasure, loot and fame!

At first glance, Flinthook looks to be your stereotypical indie game. Pixel graphics? Check. Roguelike? Check. Action platformer? Check. If you have a list of your typical indie game, Flinthook is that game. But thankfully, it has some really fun mechanics that made me keep coming back for more.

In Flinthook, you play a space pirate hunting down bounties on some pirate lords. The gameplay loop is pretty simple. You choose a bounty and go through a few levels to collect some skull gems. Once you’ve collected enough skull gems you’ll be ushered to a boss fight. Rinse and repeat. Persistent upgrades are in the form of cards that you can allocate a finite number of points to make your runs easier.

But the ‘hook’ in Flinthook, (hehehe, get it?), is literally a hook. You are armed with a hookshot, which allows you to hook onto golden rings and zip around the room; avoiding traps and projectiles or putting you in better position to attack enemies or to reach some fine loot. And it’s this hookshot mechanic that makes me keep wanting to go back to Flinthook. It makes the gameplay loop extremely satisfying.

The physics feel great and the mobility afforded to you by your mighty hookshot gives off a sense of freedom that makes you want to challenge yourself to pull off flashier maneuvers, sometimes to your own detriment. The hookshot only makes up 1/3rd of Flinthook’s arsenal however. He also has his trusty pistol, and his Chronobelt, which, you guessed it, slows down time. Slowing down time is also the only method to get past force fields. But I felt the Chronobelt mechanic added too much fluff to the gameplay. It was an unnecessary addition that could have been left out for a purer experience.

But just having freedom of movement and slow motion powers is not enough. The level design needs to be tight to take advantage of these mechanics. And, they mostly do that well. While the mechanics are great, the level design needed to take advantage of these mechanics can sometime feel cheap. Seems at times the level design philosophy is to put as much traps and shit as possible. That’s not always the case however, a lot of the levels are difficult but not all feel cheap. I did see rooms repeating after only a few hours of play so level design isn’t that varied, but that’s not that huge of a deal breaker.

I also had an issue of not being able to see the traps clearly. It could be a pressure sensitive plate of death on the floor which is mostly a thin grey line, or it could be a ball of deadly spikes at the corner, the design and colour just seems to blend too well that it makes it hard to discern what you can touch and what is supposed to kill you. I can’t glance at the room and take in all the info I need, which if you look at it can be considered playing into its difficulty, but it can be frustrating at times. You’ll be dodging enemies and projectiles like a space pirate pro but then you’ll get killed by spikes.

In the end, Flinthook has its flaws, but it more than makes up for them with it’s satisfying gameplay loop. Especially with that hook mechanic. It just makes you feel so cool, zipping around the room while dispatching enemies. It’s an early contender to make it onto my game of the year list for 2017, it’s that good. Flinthook is a great pick up and play game, challenging and just so satisfying. Seriously, that hook.

SCORE: 8.5/10

...a hugely compelling mix of 2D action-platforming and Roguelike game design. 9/10

Rogue Legacy is a must-play, and a steal at its $15 price tag. 90/100

Rogue Legacy rewarded my patience and tenacity; that's a lesson any developer can take from its twisted family tree. 9/10

This is a game that won't just eat up your time, but it will devour it. 8.5/10

... an immensely rewarding action game that strikes a terrific balance between permadeath and progress. 8.5/10

About the Game
Rogue Legacy is a genealogical rogue-LITE where anyone can be a hero.

Each time you die, your child will succeed you. Every child is unique. One child might be colorblind, another might have vertigo-- they could even be a dwarf.

That's OK, because no one is perfect, and you don't have to be perfect to win this game. But you do have to be pretty darn good because this game is HARD. Fortunately, every time you die all the gold you've collected can be used to upgrade you manor, giving your next child a step up in life and another chance at vanquishing evil.

But you shouldn't listen to me. You should check out the trailer. It explains the game better then I ever could.

If you really want to READ about this game though, then you should check out our bullet list below.

Here's what Rogue Legacy IS:

A procedurally generated adventure. Explore new castles with every life.

Rogue-lite. Your character dies, but with each passing your lineage grows and becomes stronger.

Tons of unique traits that makes each playthrough special. Ever wanted to be dyslexic? Now you can!

More than 8 classes to choose from (9)! Each class has unique abilities that change the way you play the game.

Over 60 different enemies to test your skills against. Hope you like palette-swaps!

Massive, expandable skill tree. Rack in the loot to upgrade your manor and give your successors a cutting edge.

Oh yeah, there's a Blacksmith and an Enchantress shop but we forgot to show them in the trailer...

Equip your heroes with powerful weaponry and armor. Or gain new abilities like flight, dash, and air jumping.

Tons of secrets and easter eggs to uncover... or are there? Yes there are.

Got a controller? Play with a controller. Big Picture ready.
