New Frontier Days: Founding Pioneers (Nintendo Switch) Review | 8-Bit Eric

New Frontier Days - Founding Pioneers is the first sim game on the Nintendo Switch. You play as a settler tasked with colonizing a new land. You have to keep your people fed, housed, and happy, all without going broke!

The game operates point and click style. You point and click on a settler and you can then order them to do stuff such as Chop down trees, mine rocks, shear sheep, fish, hunt boar or even attack bears. Every action will reward you with resources.

Gather enough of these and you will be able to construct buildings like houses, saw mills, quarry, kitchens and other places to create more resources, sell resources. This also allows you to get new settlers as you grow and keeps your town happy.

Each year, there is a Harvest Festival, which costs you cash and food. So it is important that you get used to selling materials for cash, and cooking up vast quantities of food. Sometimes random events happen that cause your city to face disaster, the most common experience is wild boars running thru town.

This will set you back a bit, but adds a decent challenge. Now there are three play modes : Story Mode, Survival Mode, & Free Mode.

In Free Mode the player is able to play to his or her heart’s content without any worry about getting a game over screen. Story Mode requires the player to have enough food and currency to keep the villagers happy, but if you run out of either of these for two years in a row and it’s game over. Survival Mode does away with any introduction and hand holding tutorials and tosses the player right into building your settlement.

The main objective is to go from the pioneer age to the modern age. If you don't have a steady stream of resources being made and sold, you won't be able to afford the rapid expansion necessary.

I personally prefer playing in portable mode because New Frontier Days actually supports the touch screen. I will admit the graphics of this game are pretty basic, and this does look like a cheaply made game you would see on app stores for your phone.

The visuals while colorful, just look plain and ugly at times. There isn’t too much in way of animations or personality in the settlers either.

This game does bare minimum for its type of genre, and even though it never claimed to be more than what it was, it just feels a little outdated for the Switch, especially with games like Stardew Valley coming out later.

Personally, I enjoyed this game enough to play it while waiting at the Doctor’s office, and on road trips, but it is bare minimum as mindless as a Facebook game from 2008.

If this is your type of game, you probably could get some waste of time out of it, but if you are already looking at this game and thinking it looks boring, I wouldn’t bother.

GAME DETAILS
A build-from-scratch frontier town-building simulation game!

What kind of towns will you build in the frontier lands?

New Frontier Days ~Founding Pioneers~ is a town-building simulation game, where you command your pioneers to colonize a new land.

The pioneers are capable of Logging, Mining, Hunting, Fishing, and many others.
Command them accordingly, and build your own town efficiently!

From the materials gathered via the actions of your pioneers, you can then use them to Build! With the buildings, you can then process logs into lumber, weave wool into textiles, grow plants with the Field and many more! Make your town thrive with all these useful buildings!

You can also keep wild animals as pets too! Pets can go out with the pioneers to gather materials, or they can help in hunting, and even allow pioneers to ride on their backs!

As you progress in colonizing the land, you may obtain Invention Cards along the way. These cards provide various effects, such as shortening your farm harvesting time cycle, and increasing the fishing time and etc. There are over 290 cards in the game! Use them wisely!

3 Game Modes are in the game. First, there is the Story Mode, where you set out with the help of your lovely assistant, Jessica, to build your dream town from scratch, overcome all sorts of obstacles, and aim to develop into a city.

Switch's JP eShop pumps out a lot more news than the US eShop

Just some observations in a test video uploading video from the YouTube app on my phone. Also, Frontier Days isn't out in the US but has a complete Eng localization. It's a fairly decent Settlers clone.
