Puyo Puyo Tetris - Demo - Tetris Tutorial

And here is the other tutorial. They run a bit long, so I split them into two. Whereas this would be the third Puyo game I've made gameplay videos for, this is the first Tetris game. (I got pretty close to doing a playthrough of Tetrisphere one time, but that's not actually a Tetris game. Well, it has Tetris blocks, but it doesn't play a thing like a normal Tetris game.)

I actually had not been playing Tetris for that long, beginning with Tetris DS, not counting homemade Tetris programs created for graphic calculators. I never programmed anything myself for the TI-83 Plus I had, but I did play Tetris for a brief moment on it. Tetris DS was my first actual attempt at understanding the rules, however, and really, it was the only Tetris game I actually owned. However, I can confidently say I am much better at Tetris than I am at Puyo Puyo. I'm no grand master, but I can at least claim to be competent at Tetris. I used to think I was pretty good at Puyo Puyo, considering I smoked the computer player in Timon & Pumbaa's Jungle Games, but when I picked up Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine for the Wii's Virtual Console, I got schooled big time.

Tetris was invented by Alexey Pajitnov, a computer engineer in the Soviet war effort. According to him, his department got a lot of time where nothing was happening, so he programmed Tetris, based on a popular Russian wooden block puzzle in which you fill an entire grid with block-shaped pieces, so he and his co-workers wouldn't be bored all the time. The whole department couldn't get enough of Pajitnov's game, so he decided to share it with everyone he knew. It became a local hit, and when he discovered he couldn't earn a living selling the game due to the whole communism stuff getting in his way, he eventually slipped into the United States, found Nintendo of America, demonstrated Tetris and how it could be palyed on the Game Boy, and the rest is history. Pajitnov currently works for Microsoft as a game designer, by the way. Those of you with an Xbox 360 might recall it coming with a puzzle game called Hexic. That's one of Pajitnov's 21st-century creations.

The Tetris license is currently owned by The Tetris Company, of which Pajitnov is not a part of. They are infamous for their hair-trigger legal aggressiveness. They rarely make Tetris games themselves, but rather, license the Tetris name and gameplay out to various companies. It is not cheap, which is part of why I'm surprised Puyo Puyo Tetris exists at all. But I guess Puyo Puyo is popular enough in Japan to do this. (For the most part, they license out to video game companies, but you can find Tetris merchandise if you know where to look.)

When you're playing Tetris, you're playing to survive. You are given blocks of four units, known as Tetriminoes or Tetraminoes. Each possible configuration is named after a letter: I, O, Z, S, L, J, and T. Each time a horizontal line is completely filled up, it disappears, and all blocks above it fall to fill in that space. Due to Tetris's nature, you cannot chain like you can in Puyo proper: When blocks drop, every row will always have at least one gap. You can chain in a different way, however, which is to make rows disappear with consecutive Tetriminoes, though that requires a large amount of setup prior. The maximum amount of rows that can be cleared at once is 4, which is a Tetris (and is Russian slang for four).

Since Tetris does not come with a regular set of characters, but it'd be weird if the Puyo side has characters where the Tetris side does not, a new group of characters were created for the Tetris side. Most of them are named after a Tetris block--Ai, O, Zed, Ess, Jay & Elle, and Tee--though to my knowledge, they don't get more of that block than usual. Raffina and Rulue are existing Puyo characters who have been reassigned to Tetris. And to contrast the schoolhouse-in-the-fantasy-forest look of the Puyo Puyo games, Tetris is also set in a school, but it has a technology theme to it and has lecture hall style seating rather than the standard school desks of Puyo.

The third and last video of the demo is a bunch of matches I've played.

Puyo Puyo Tetris - Big Bang Spin Guide

Guideline Tetris games use the Super Rotation System (SRS). It defines the physics of how your piece moves, particularly when your piece is against the wall or the floor. It's kind of weird sometimes and allows you to do some crazy movements that don't make any sense, so I made this video to show you how to do spins featured in Big Bang mode. If you want to learn more spins, watch Chopin's twist guide:

Puyo Puyo Tetris - Adventure - 10-8, 10-9, 10-10

And here it is, finally the end of the Adventure Mode. Have you noticed the loading screen of this game has the same sheen as Ex's hair and the yellow of his arm guards and trousers?

10-8 - Custody Battle
Swap
Beat Zed!
Huh? Is there a divorce happening? Have the shippers finally gotten to the people who make this game? Of course not! Thank goodness. Here, we get anew tidbit of information that might explain a lot of background between Ess and Zed: Zed was a robot built by Ex to be Ess's parental substitute. Somehow, it worked a bit too well, with Ess convinced Zed is her real father. Ess's biological father is actually Ex, as is revealed here. (Those are some...interesting planetoids in the background.)

10-9 - An Unexpected Encounter
Endless Trial
Score 35,000 points within 1 minute!
This is the last part of the game where you play without an opponent and as you can see, even the one-star requirements are strict. But what else do you expect when Professor Accord provides a task? It's 65,000 points for the three stars though! And yet, somehow, I careened past that and managed to finish this grueling 60 seconds with about 100,000 points. Is this good for any extra credit, Professor Accord?

10-10 - The Dreamer & the Dream
Versus
Beat Tee! (Tetris vs Tetris)
And here it is, the last part of the Adventure Mode. Ex comes across Tee, and he realizes that he is just a part of Tee's dream...however that works. The match itself asks for 45,000 points, and in a way, this is like 1-1, where the difficulty lies not so much in beating the computer player as it is letting them stay alive until you reach the score necessary. So, what does this all build up to? Just a message from Ex to Tee, to see him again sometime. (Is this the development team's way of saying they'd like to make a Puyo Puyo Tetris 2?)

Thank you for watching! This concludes my coverage of Puyo Puyo Tetris's Adventure Mode. There will be videos of online play of Puyo Puyo Tetris in the future, as well as miscellaneous things here and there. Ordinarily, I'll announce which game I'll go through next, but I'm still going through my coverage of Freedom Planet, so that will resume shortly. The pace of videos will slow down too, now that I'm back to one game's single-player mode. (As for what comes after Freedom Planet, I'm really not sure. It'll depend on when I finish.)

Puyo Puyo Tetris - Online Cheating Analysis.

This was performed during private matches with the consent of the person I was playing against (Special Thanks to Zolton1956), don't be That Guy and hack online, not that it will be easy for someone to do. keep in mind the way my hack works is the way most amateur hackers will also do it.so while it might still be possible to hack and cheat online in a way that affects others, I believe most people will not have the skill necessary to do so.

Puyo Puyo Tetris is an incredibly well balanced game

said no one ever

Edit:
I'm gonna make some final points before I disable notifications for this video because seeing people repeat nonsense is getting kinda tiring (which means I will very rarely if ever respond to comments anymore):

1. There are three different strategies when it comes to playing Tetris:
General attack, the way you should play and how you will see most players play
Survival-centric, at the cost of damage (not so good)
Combo (terrible)
Yeah I could have done survival better in this video but that's just about the only way I played poorly. Attacking skills ranged from normal to great.

2. Okay yes. I'm salty. Because if I say literally anything else, it won't matter because you guys obviously love rebuttals like lol you just SUCK and CAN'T TAKE ADVICE! To everyone I have responded to so far, my response has not mattered at all.

3. Yes, I *probably* know more and am better at this game than you are and thus am *probably* more qualified to talk about how you should be playing. I am, according to the leaderboards, in the top 1% of players, as a purely tetris player. So yes, I think that means I am pretty good. I have over 800 hours on this game. That doesn't inherently mean you are wrong, either. There were one or two instances of people actually *not* being stupid. Granted, they were giving advice like Do better at surviving or Hit them with strong attacks more often which is something you should be doing if you want to get better even outside of matchup, but at least they weren't factually incorrect. Literally just watch my play in the video and see my skill caliber. I clearly must know something about how to play the game with how good I am, I'm not clueless.

4. Puyo is way too strong and saying otherwise without specifically specifying that you are referring to the very top tier of players is nonsense. Again I go back to the fact that I am technically in the top 1% but still struggle with matchup. I perform better against top 20 Tetris players than against *this guy* so yes, I am inclined to say that the game's balance is shit and is tilted too much in favor of Puyo players for a gigantic majority of players.

5. Taking the title alone, it's still 100% true regardless of which game you play ¯_(ツ)_/¯ Majority of tetris players get fucked, tournament level puyo players get fucked.
