Sunless Sea Guide - How to make money in the early game (minor spoilers)

So, a small guide for Sunless Sea, covering how to get going in the early game and make some money.

It's actually pretty straightforward, and takes advantage of the fact that death is encouraged.

Essentially, quickly make 200 echoes, buy the reproach gun, die, pass it to your heir, and then get going. Head out and uncover as many ports as possible, including strategic information for the Admiralty.

Uncover the Salt Lions if you can, and also Mount Palmerston (because the Blind Bruiser quests can net quite a lot of cash quickly).

Spend the first 1200 on lodgings and a will, and don't forget to start a scion legacy, which will put you in great shape for down the line. You can then retire, if you like, and do it all again, starting from an even stronger position.

After that, you're on your own!

Sunless Sea Strategy & Tactics 10: Retirement

Today we bid farewell to our first Zee Capitan as things are looking more and more like he has reached the end of his useful lifespan. While he might not have completed his life's goal, he has set things up for his heir quite nicely.

Sunless Sea: How To Reduce Terror Guide

In this guide, we'll look at how to manage and reduce Terror. We'll look at a few things you can buy to do it (bigger engines, for example), and the effect of the main ports which can rapidly mitigate and reduce terror issues.

Mostly, they're around the edge - Fallen London and the Cumaen Canal are obvious candidates, but there's perhaps a few further afield you didn't know about

Sunless Sea: Zubmariner - How to Make Money Trading - A Stoic Plays

While not really intended to be a trading game, with the right ship and route you can make a lot of money trading goods in the Zubmariner expansion for Sunless Sea. In this video I show you how.

Sunless Sea: Zubmariner is a game by Failbetter Games ( and can be purchased on Steam (

Disclosure: The developers were kind enough to give me a preview version of the game but as always the choice to record the video was my own and content was not influenced in any way.

Sunless Sea Best Engine: Fulgent Impeller & Tireless Mechanic Story (Element of Dawn)

Ahh, the Fulgent Impellor. A very long, very complicated quest, involving all sorts of running all over the map, and upgrading of ships.

You'll need an Element of Dawn, cargo space for 42 items (plus fuel and supplies), the Unsettling Sage from Wisdom and the Mechanic's Secret from Frostfound.

The Element of Dawn requires the Memento Mori, available through the Cannoneer's Story, and that's here:

None of these are easy things to do, but the engine is excellent, and totally worth it.

5 Tips for Sunless Skies (Launch Edition)

In this video, I cover 5 tips I have for new players to Sunless Skies. Time Stamps: 0:00 Intro 0:53 Check Trade Options 2:42 Good officers 4:01 Repair at Winchester 4:56 Weak Targets 7:06 Level up

1. Check trade prospects and bargains in the Bazzar tab as often as possible

2. Get Officers for powerful early-game boosts to your stats.

3. Repair at New Winchester when ever you go back. Enemy ships should almost always be used to get more loot. (repairs are a bit more costly now, 3 sovereigns will repair a hull point instead of 1 sovereign, which is still a pretty good deal)

4. Pick off weak faction units for good loot.

5. Get exp anyway you can, as level-up provide a lot of bonuses to your stats.

Sunless Sea - Engines: The Serpentine & The Genial Magician + Prudent/Urbane/Satisfied Magician

So, how to get the Serpentine Engine in Sunless Sea. First up, you'll need to recruit the Genial Magician in London, then follow his Storylet to promote him to the Satisfied Magician.

For this, you're going to need around 2000 echoes:
1200 for the engine
500 for one of the story parts
~150 for Honey (unless you have a very high mirrors score)
1 Scintillack (Port Cecil)
3 Secrets

Anyway, first port of call is Venderbight (if you're lucky) or Irem (with some coffee). Then off to Khan's Heart (bring 500 echoes), and then back to London, to the Forgotten Quarter. Assuming luck goes your way, you'll get Serpentine.

Sunless Sea Strategy & Tactics 6: Mr Happy

Having dodged the wrath of the bruiser on several occasions, we finally return to London with his task complete. But he isn't done with us. We have one last task. Can we finish his quest as well as the Salt Lions?

Sunless Skies Game Description:

Sunless Skies is a Gothic Horror roleplay game with a focus on exploration and exquisite storytelling.
Command a flying steam locomotive

The only thing between you and the waste-winds, storms and cosmic lightning is your engine. Tend and upgrade it, buy weaponry and exotic equipment, and keep her hull in good shape to hold the hostile Heavens at bay.
Explore a unique and dangerous universe

You play the captain of a locomotive, a steam engine fitted for off-rail travel: sailing the stars, leading your crew into trouble and out of their minds. Smuggle souls, barter for crates of time, stop for cricket and a cup of tea.

Discover more of the deep, dark and marvelous Fallen London Universe, as seen in our previous game, SUNLESS SEA. (You can play either game first, the stories coexist happily.)

Fight her majesty's agents, pirates and abominations of the skies

Face ships of differing factions and unknowable beasts each with different attacks and agendas.
Survive starvation, madness and terror.

Manage your crew’s condition and your captain’s nightmares. Balance fuel and supplies against your desire for new horizons, knowledge or riches. Struggle with sights never meant for human eyes. How will the dark change you?
Recruit officers on your adventures

Populate your ship with unique, upgradeable officers, each with their own quest to fulfill: an incautious driver, an incognito princess, a repentant devil, and - dear god! - your Aunt?! How did she get out here?

Discover your captain’s past through narrative levelling

Reveal your captain’s past deeds as facets of their personality as you progress. Most captains will perish, but their actions will leave a mark on the world for their descendants - for better or worse. Pass on some effects, and return anew to deal with events that your previous captain put into motion.

The High Wilderness is a wondrous vision of space: shifting, wind-swept ruins where the laws of the cosmos are not as we imagined.

The stars are alive. They are the Judgments: vast intelligences that govern all things. But they are dying. One by one, something is snuffing them out, leaving their thrones empty.

Unfettered by trivial things like gravity, the Victorian Empire have pushed their tendrils into this new world, and their ambition is savage. They have built a new Sun. The Empress Victoria reigns from the Throne of Hours, which gives her control over time.

Your Captain and crew must carve out a life between the stars. Will you support her majesty and the establishment, or the working class rebels who yearn for freedom from the Workworlds?

Multiple, intertwining stories with a depth and richness unlike anything else in games, inspired by CS Lewis, Jules Verne, Lovecraft and HG Wells

Lush, hand-drawn 2d art to match

Four giant regions to explore: celestial wilderness, impossible industrial empire, pagan midnight expanse, and the mysterious Blue Kingdom.

A choice of play styles: build a lineage of captains as each dies, or reload your most recent captain and continue

Key remapping and full controller support

Sunless Sea Legacies | An Adumbration of Her Heart | +10 Pages | Explore the Abyss

Read more for the quick answers!

So, back to Sunless Sea. I've been exploring the Zubmariner content, and here's how to get a very easy legacy, which also boosts stats insanely on later playthroughs.

An Adumbration of Her Heart requires that you explore the many, many Abysses littered under the Zee. Perhaps you've ventured into them and found the dark cathedrals waiting below?

When you sail(?) over one, an interaction will appear. There are four in total (spread randomly across 16 or so abysses), and you need to submerge all four in the correct order.

First, the Abyss of Scriptures, then Pyres, Pomegranates and finally the Abyss of Graves. Dive twice (a tricky hearts challenge), and start the appropriate rituals.

When all are complete, it's Elemental time. What will you choose?

Good luck!

About the game:

Sunless Sea is a nautical roguelike in glorious 2D, presenting a non-linear, choice-heavy, personalised experience.

Set on a randomised map, it’ll take dozens of games to explore all the sub-plots, grand arcs, alternatives, mysteries, relationships and romances in the game. Your character will die (or disappear, or lose her mind, or be hollowed out and filled with candle-wax and haunt a cliff-top chapel), but their legacy may survive. You’ll build up your own story across generations of zailors who braved the Unterzee and lost – or won…

ICDR 10 [Sunless Sea] - Comatose Ferret?

Sunless Sea is a dark and rich world in which you explore the seas of Fallen London. This was my first look at the game, and I have yet to get very far. From what I've gathered though, there is a whole lot to discover and plenty of opportunities to choose your own path. The mechanics took me a while to figure out, and long stretches of sailing can get a bit dull in the early game (unless you're running out of fuel...) but I suspect the game will grow on me as I get deeper into the story. I like the persistence built into the game through the inheritence system. When you die (and you will) you can leave behind some (but not all) of what you acquired to your decendant, pupil, etc. who then becomes the next character you play. I like that in a game; it makes me feel like I'm progressing even when I'm dying a lot, as I suspect will be a frequent occurence in this game, haha!
